What are the benefits of self-publishing?

Self-publishing has become more popular over recent years, but did you know that women have chosen to self-publish their books since the early 1900’s? Florence Scovel Shinn is one of my favourite authors. She couldn’t find a publishing house to publish her first book, so decided she would publish it herself. It wasn’t until Louise Hay happened across her books that they became published with a publishing house. By that time Florence had passed away.

I decided to self-publish after being rejected by Hay House. I didn’t have 5000 followers. I could have paid to get them, but they wouldn’t have been my audience, they wouldn’t necessarily have bought my books. It didn’t feel aligned, so I decided to head down the self-publishing route. There was a lot to learn and took me about six months to learn how to self publish. The amazing thing is that once you have self published one book, you have learnt the process and can self publish more. I am currently writing number 5 and number 6 simultaneously. If you want to check out my first self published book, A Gentle Hug for the Soul, you can find it here.

Why would you want to self-publish?

Self-publishing has many advantages. You are in control of what your book looks like and feels like. You get to create the cover, the blurb. You aren’t under time pressure. Traditional publishing can take up to 18 months. Pieces of your book may be altered or edited out, even if you feel it is an important part of the book. Self-publishing allows you to create the book that you want, in the time you want to.

What are the benefits of self-publishing?

  • Quicker timeline than traditional publishing
  • You receive all of your royalty rates
  • You retain all rights over your book
  • Market your book your way, whether that is TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, you get to decide
