What does being a conscious leader really mean?

Maybe you have seen these words on social media or appearing on LinkedIn, but what does being a conscious leader really mean? Leadership is often associated with hierarchy and top down management structure. I used to work for a large retailer starting in 2004 and ending my career seven years later. I started as a department manager. I had a team leader that I delegated tasks to and in turn they delegated to the twenty seven staff. I had a manager, who had a manager, who had a manager etc. If the person at the top was unhappy it slowly worked it’s way down through the chain. It didn’t feel like leadership, it was management of people. Leadership for me is about instilling a sense of culture, a sense of identity and actually doing what you expect others to do. That was one huge lesson I learnt in retail and life, never ask someone to do something for you, that you aren’t willing to do or at least have a go at doing yourself.

Conscious leadership is about leading from your heart rather than from your head. Decisions made with people in mind and listening to your intuition. It is about balancing your own yin and yang energies, masculine and feminine. We all have both energies within us. The masculine side is the doer, the action taker, the go getter, the goal seeking and driven. The feminine side is intuitive, gentle, actively listening, creating ideas and feeling. When we balance these two energies within us, we become more conscious of how, as individuals we work. If we are constantly in the masculine energy we will burn out. If we are constantly in the feminine energy, nothing happens. So we need that blend of both to be in harmony with ourselves and our businesses.

Can you be a conscious leader without a spiritual based business?

Yes, of course you can. Awareness of self is key. It doesn’t matter what product or service you are selling, or what your business is, it is about how you choose to lead others in your business. I remember a while ago reading about a guy in the US who had a shipping company, I think it was. It was a very male dominated industry. He decided one day that it would be great to introduce meditation into the workplace. He led by example, bringing his workers together for 15 minutes every morning to meditate. After a few weeks he began to see results. His staff were more focused, more productive, calmer, there was lower sickness rates. He chose to do something that felt aligned with him and shared that with his company. It worked.

If you are a leader right now, great but are you a conscious leader? Would love to hear your thoughts on this, let me know in the comments below and if you want to stay updated on my upcoming conscious leader workshop subscribe to my newsletter below where you will be the first to hear!
